From my own perspective, I think that this song is about living life to the full, enjoying it, appreciating what and who you have. Reuben had a short 20 year life and he was taken suddenly and throughout this song Mac reinforces the fact that life is short and it goes too fast. The fact that he's looking through memories shows that he misses the time spent with his friend and how valuable it is to have time with your loved ones keeping them as close as you can.
